How Often Are New Pokemon Sets Released?
The Pokemon Trading Card Game follows a fairly consistent release cadence. Main expansion sets typically launch every three to four months, with smaller special sets, mini-expansions, and promo collections filling the gaps in between. In a typical year, collectors can expect four main series expansions plus two to four special or mini sets.
Since the launch of Pokemon TCG Pocket in late 2024, there has been a parallel release schedule for digital-only Pocket expansions alongside the traditional physical card releases. Pocket expansions tend to release monthly or every few weeks, giving digital collectors a constant stream of new cards to chase. The physical Scarlet & Violet era continued through 2025 before transitioning to the new Master Ball Era, which kicked off with its own cadence in late 2025.

Tips for Pre-ordering Pokemon TCG Sets
Pre-ordering new Pokemon TCG sets is a smart way to secure product at or below MSRP before demand spikes on release day. Here are some practical tips to help you get the best deals:
- Pre-order early — The best prices and availability are typically found when pre-orders first open, often two to three months before the official release date.
- Diversify your sources — Check multiple retailers including local game stores, major online retailers, and the Pokemon Center website. Local game stores often offer competitive pricing and may include promotional items.
- Know the product lineup — Each set release includes booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs), booster bundles, and sometimes special collections. ETBs are popular for both opening and holding sealed.
- Set a budget — It is easy to get swept up in release hype. Decide ahead of time how much you want to spend and stick to it.
- Check what is in each set — Before pre-ordering, review the set card list to see if the chase cards and overall set composition appeal to you.
