About Pokemon Evolution in the TCG

Evolution is a core mechanic of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Most Pokemon evolve from a Basic stage through one or two evolution stages, gaining stronger attacks and higher HP as they evolve. In the TCG, you play a Basic Pokemon card first, then place the evolved form on top of it on your next turn. Some modern card types like Pokemon-EX, V, and ex bypass traditional evolution, entering play as powerful Basic Pokemon.

Popular Evolution Lines

The most collected evolution lines in the Pokemon TCG include the original Kanto starters: Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard, Squirtle → Wartortle → Blastoise, and Bulbasaur → Ivysaur → Venusaur. The Eevee evolution line is especially popular, with nine different evolutions spanning multiple types.
